  • Methyl ter-Butyl Ether [MTBE]

Methyl tert Butyl Ether, also known as MTBE, is a chemical compound with the molecular formula C5H12O, and is an ether derived from isobutanol. Some of its main technical qualities are:

    1. Solubility: MTBE is highly soluble in a wide range of organic solvents, such as ethanol, diethyl ether and chloroform. In addition, it is slightly soluble in water.
    2. Boiling point: MTBE has a boiling point of approximately 55 degrees Celsius, making it volatile at relatively low temperatures.
    3. Chemical stability: MTBE is a chemically stable compound under normal conditions. It is not prone to breaking down or reacting easily with other chemical compounds.
    4. Properties as an additive: One of the main applications of MTBE is as an additive in gasoline. It is mixed with gasoline to increase its octane number, which improves engine efficiency and reduces the emission of polluting gases.
    5. Flammability: MTBE is flammable and may form explosive mixtures with air at certain concentrations.
    6. Odor and taste: MTBE has a characteristic ether-like odor and unpleasant taste, making it easily detectable at low concentrations.
    7. Toxicity: MTBE is considered toxic to humans at high concentrations. Prolonged exposure or high doses may have adverse health effects.
    8. Environment: MTBE has been the subject of environmental concern due to its ability to contaminate groundwater. It has been detected in drinking water sources in areas where gasoline containing MTBE has been spilled.
